Past and Present

Description: These are some old photos I found while digging through some files on my computer. I realized that these images are from the first teaching session when my group focused mainly on chapter 2. Just by looking at these photos we can see that the students involved are engaged and know what is going on in the classroom around them. For our activity, we asked them to draw as children in each of the stages. We can see that Heather's group is extremely involved. They drew an outdoor scene with lots of detail. This shows that they, along with children of that age, are starting to become aware of their surroundings. We can also see the Megan and Chrissy were part of the "scribblers." They had a difficult time remembering how to do such a simple task.

Reflection: As I look back on these photos, I can reflect on how I have grown. For instance, this teaching experience was only my second. I taught one lesson in EDS 150, but I wasn't required to make a lesson plan. Actually preparing a plan was very helpful. I can definitely see why teachers create their lesson plans months in advance. However, I do remember the stress that goes into planning a lesson. My group also had a difficult time planning meetings and such. With that in mind, I would still like to think that our lesson went well. I am sure that an educator can judge the effectiveness of their lesson based on what their students learn. If this is truly the case then our lesson was a success. I feel that the students came away with a clear understanding of what the different stages were, and how they were defined. Even though this lesson is in the past, looking back to it for pointers has been most helpful. The lesson that followed wasn't so successful and I find some comfort in knowing that I am capable.

Connection: This activity could definitely be applied to an actual teaching experience. Now I can see why teacher plan their lessons months in advance. I also see why they go into such great detail. Planning for one hour was a struggle for me. I can only imagine the struggles of planning for an entire day. I know that it is acceptable to stray from your plans a little, but I am still confused on how strictly an educator should stick to their starting points. This gives me some insight into the kind of teacher I am going to be. Some have their own specific style and I believe that I will be no different. However, it takes more than one lesson to tell. I guess we shall see ...
